Day 1

Arrive Luang Prabang

Enjoy a 20-minute drive from the airport in an air con van then settle in to your hotel. You’ll be helped out with all practicalities. Take a shower and relax before a short stroll to your welcome dinner at a delightful restaurant overlooking the river

After dinner we have a night market stroll and watch the locals display their clothes, homewares and trinkets for sale. Pick up a bargain to take back home as gifts.

Day 2

Ock Pop Tok Textiles awareness 1.5-hour seminar – From silk worms to Nagas.

Free afternoon

Hosted by Ock Pop Tok’s cofounders, Veomanee Duangdala & Joanna Smith. This is a 1.5-hour presentation illustrating the journey of Laos textiles from the creation of silk to the weaving process and the meaning of motifs.

Seminar structure:

Introduction to Ock Pop Tok, their mission, initiatives and current events.

A brief history of silk textiles.

How to reel silk worms and make silk thread.

Natural dyeing & dye sources; audience participation assisting with a demonstration of dyeing silk.

Refreshments Break – Lemongrass tea and for the adventurous Saa Kii Morn (medicinal tea made from silkworm poo), Dtor Morn (fried silk worms)

Weaving techniques – the three main techniques used in Laos; Supplementary, Tapestry & Ikat.

Use of textiles in Laos – showcasing samples of different textiles, discussing their function and the meaning of motifs – what is a Naga?

The weavers at work – a walk through the Ock Pop Tok weaving area to watch our skilled artisans at work.

Discussion – time for questions and answers!

Day 3

Ock Pop Tok Textiles class. Natural dyeing and weaving.

This class offers the opportunity for students to explore the techniques used in Ikat weaving. The class involves wrapping the silk and natural dyeing process of the weft threads, which render the pattern, followed by weaving your own Ikat Scarf (180 cm) to take home.

Colours and patterns are customisable!

Day 5

Kuang Si Waterfall tour with lunch 

Morning departure to waterfall with lunch. Pack your swimmers as we head out of town in our air con van to Kuang Si waterfalls. Layer after layer of cascading turquoise water. Great for a swim or simply relax, enjoy and take some great photos.

Lunch is at a tranquil restaurant. Here you will enjoy high quality food whilst watching the waters cascade past your table.

Day 6

Ock Pop Tok Textiles class. Natural dyeing and weaving

Learn traditional Hmong techniques. Select your pattern and your choice of product

Day 8

Free day. Final group dinner

Free day to please yourself. Simply mooch around the delightful old town, café’s and shops. Perhaps a massage or facial? If you want more action, head out to the Mandalao elephant conservation center, the buffalo farm or butterfly farm. Or just have a swim at a resort pool (outside the old town). Focus Tours can help you book any of these optional extras.

To finish the day at 6:00pm we have our final group dinner. A great way to celebrate our time together with our newly made friends.
